Once inside the bedroom, Alison shut the door and fell against it in relief. The entire time Maggie brushed out her hair and plaited it, she’d felt his eyes upon her. Several times she had closed her own, thinking that when she opened them he would have looked away.

But he never did.

Why?

Had he been comparing her to Amy?

Did he find her lacking?

Had he given her reason to believe he cared?

She groaned in disgust. It seemed absurd and shallow to concentrate on such inane questions, especially at a time like this. But her mind continued circling in an odd carousel, starting with the moment he saved her life, whirling to later when she doctored his hands, and still later, as he watched her in front of the fire. Over and over, around and around, she thought about those unsettling, breathless moments. She tended to constantly question what she didn’t understand, and she certainly didn’t understand the master of this household!

“Oh, Amy, what have I gotten myself into? Is it wrong to feel like this? Would you be angry if you knew?”

The patchwork quilt moved near Clarissa’s leg, and Alison’s attention abruptly shifted to the foot of the bed. She stared in confusion then gave a short laugh as a yellow-and-cream-colored furry head appeared.

“I see you managed to find refuge,” Alison said to the tabby that Clarissa had named Peaches. Alison sank to the edge of the mattress. “This bed is getting more crowded every time I look. At least Clarissa’s mind will be at ease, though I’m not certain her father would agree to this arrangement.”

“Meow?” Peaches seemed to question and stretched his sleek body in lazy contentment as if he had every right to be there. Alison ruffled his fur. The cat lightly batted her wrist with his paw, showing his fangs slowly and pausing, as if wanting to play. Alison stroked his warm silky side, sensing that he tested her. A rumbling purr soon rewarded her theory as Peaches closed his eyes in bliss.

“Tell me,” she mused, “are all the males of this household so difficult to figure out and so uncertain of what they want?”

She had no idea why she asked such a silly question—of a cat no less—but airing it helped to settle her nerves, and she finally felt she might be able to sleep.

She looked at the bed.

Somewhere…

She shed her dress and managed to slip onto a section of mattress that gave her as much space as elbow to hand. She only hoped she could manage to remain on the bed through the night.
